Written basketball

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

I’ve done my first written basketball exam :-)

Passed my F-exam with 80 points (out of 100). Now I’m gonna suffer, because they’re gonna put me on the refereeing schedule more, now I actually know the rules (well, 80% of them).

Refereeing, on my own

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Yesterday was the first day I had to referee an official basketball game. I was pretty nervous. I’ve done it before, but that’s already so long ago, I hardly remember it.

It was arranged that I would share the honours with one of my team-mates, who’s a proper ref with official shirt and all. But when it my turn in the limelight there turned out to be only three refs for three games, so I had to arbiter a game by myself! I chose the lowest level one. Man, it was tough! I made a lot of bad calls, mostly because I just didn’t see clearly. One of the players seems to have actually bitten another player and I gave the player that was bitten a foul. But afterwards, none of the players seemed to hold a real grievance.

Next week, I’m taking my F-course, where I’ll actually learn how to arbiter, I imagine.

Bad ref

BV Lely H5 - Old Birds H1

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

My Lely team won the first game of the season, against the Old Birds from Purmerend. Only by one point, so we can do better. I’ve learned some lessons: I got to take more shots when I’m open to form more of a threat and stay on the guy who has the rebound if I’m close, to slow down their attack. Getting there. I liked that our new coach let me play almost the entire game, though.

Next game is next Saturday.

Lost my debut

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Dammit, we lost against Anoeta 2 last night, by just two points. I started off quite well, with a three-pointer on my first shot-attempt. More than half the scores of the first quarter were due to yours truly. The opposing team started defending more fervently and I didn’t get as many chances. The last minute of the match, we were still equal, I made a pass to Henk, who wasn’t looking! That cost us the match, I think.

Still, it was fun playing, with referees, and time etc. We have another match next Thursday, in Purmerend. Fingers crossed!

Cramp

Friday, September 19th, 2008

I was so wasted last night. Came home from work and slept for an hour. I hadn’t slept so well the day before. Woke up in the middle of the night with a bad cramp, probably from my legs not being used to so much basketball. Yet.

I had a meal at Greenmeals, just around the corner from where I live, but it wasn’t so great.

Hot

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

I was pretty hot at the basketball training last night. I hope they don’t think I shoot like that every time!

After practice I had to cycle to the guy that does BV Lely member adminstration, so it was a pretty late night. I’m feeling it.

BV Lely Heren 5

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Well, I chose my basketball team: it’s BV Lely, I play in Heren 5. Mainly for where and how often they train, because if I’d played with the Spuyt, I’d have been playing at a higher level. We play in poule 3A. Saturday’s my first game!

Choices, choices

Friday, September 5th, 2008

I went to two different basketball trainings this week, one at BV Lely and one at De Spuyt. I have to decide what club I’m going to join. It’s tough. I’m leaning towards BV Lely because they have a really nice court and I can do two trainings a week. They say there’s always room for more players and that I’ll definitely play. De Spuyt seems more gezellig, more eager for me to join them as they really need players, but the court where they train is pretty small and the games were quite rough. Although I need to toughen up a bit myself, especially when they put me in center position.

My legs were pretty sore on Wednesday night. Have to get used to playing so much! Really eager to play though!!!

EclipseJet MyGuide Amsterdam

Monday, September 1st, 2008

They renamed the Amsterdam basketball team to “EclipseJet MyGuide Amsterdam” because they have a new strategic partner. What are we supposed to shout at the sidelines now? We used to shout “Let’s go MyGuide, let’s go”, stupid I know, but the two syllables of “MyGuide” made it fit. There will be a 24 second violation by the time we’ve finished shouting the new name of the team…

I’m also not that happy with the new sponsor… such an environmentally bad brand…

Mario in town

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

It’s been a month since my last confession. Been reading (currently: Common Wealth: Economics for a Crowded Planet) and sharing though.

Instead of doing a recap of the past month, I’ll just pretend nothing happened and focus on recent history.

Mario from Croatia’s in town, with this new girlfriend, Tanya. I’ve been hanging out with them from time to time ever since they arrived, on Wednesday. Yesterday we played some basketball on the Museumplein while Tanya went to Van Gogh’s, where we learned that Mario is still the master of us all. Hey, he does sports for a living! In the evening we went to a jazz club, which I enjoyed more than I thought I would. Music and atmosphere were great.

Today we were supposed to be playing rollerbasketball with Mario. Not sure about that now though. From where I’m sitting the weather looks pretty shitty!

On a future note: this is an infomercial for the tournament in San Fransisco I’m heading to in about a week:
