Eppo back in 2009

Eppo will be back in 2009! Clearly the LHC is having time-dilation effects already. I’m seriously considering a subscription.

BBC TV License

September 12th, 2008

It sucks that BBC-HD is not being broadcast by UPC. And that the iPlayer doesn’t work here. Please, please, let me pay for a television license and give me access!

Guess I’m stuck with watching the Tudors in inferior resolution. Alas, poor, poor me.

Unless I get satellite and catch a stray signal of course. But then I’d need a DVR that can record the signal as well. I almost never watch TV as they broadcast it.

Big Bang!

September 10th, 2008

The world’s gonna end today (in one hour!), so I’m not sure if I should go to work.

If, by some amazing piece of luck, the world doesn’t end, I’ll watch the new The Restaurant series that supposedly starts this evening.

Skeptical Inquirer

September 9th, 2008

Last Saturday I was happy to discover the Skeptical Inquirer magazine at the American Book Center. I haven’t been able to find it recently and I was afraid the bookstore no longer stocked it.

Why do I always feel like I’m buying a dirty magazine when I buy this one? Probably because of the big area they have upstairs for consciousness/enlightenment/”law of attraction” books upstairs. And the fact that the science section is stocked with really dubious stuff that really belongs in some other section.

I once got a really dirty look from somebody at the counter when I bought this magazine. Could just have been imagining it of course.

Anyway, I’ve had no time to read it yet, still catching up on my backlog of New Scientist issues.

Law-abiding citizens

September 8th, 2008

On our first day in San Francisco, we were skating through town. We’d just skated across Golden Gate and were, when this pictue was taken, heading towards Golden Gate park. Just when we were about to take off our skates to tackle the San Francisco hills we were accosted by a retired, 85-year old police officer who told us that skating on the sidewalks was illegal. He told us that his sister had been injured by a rogue skateboard and that “there aren’t enough officers to patrol but it’s against the law” (say this in the most exagerated American cowboy accent and you get the idea).

He would have been satisfied had he seen us take off our skates (nothing much to do with him though).

Ouch

September 7th, 2008

Ouch, my leg hurts. Stretched it too much while trying to prevent a goal during rollersoccer practice. Played a whole tournament without a scratch and now this. Hope I recover quickly, I wanna play basketball this week!
